Os isotopes
Osmium occurs as an impurity in Rh, Pd and Pt, used in catalytic converters in cars. The release of osmium tetraoxide (OsO
4), an extremely toxic compound, from catalytic converters can be evaluated by studying the
187Os/
188Os isotopic ratio. This ratio is considerably lower in osmium originating from the platinum group elements than from environmental samples in general.
