THE TOYS STANDARD
The EU commission has introduced safety rules for toys. Testing is required according to the toys standard (EN 71-3:1994) to check for migration of certain substances from toys. The principle is to extract soluble elements from toy materials under conditions that simulate the material remaining in contact with gastric juices for a specific period after swallowing.

After this preparation, the leachate is analysed. Substance concentrations must not exceed the following established values:
| Threshold values EN 71-3 requirements (mg/kg) |
| As (25) |
Ba (1000) |
Cd (75) |
Cr (60) |
| Hg (60) |
Pb (90) |
Sb (60) |
Se (500) |
|
| |
 |

| E-4 Metals in toys (according to EN 71-3, accredited) |
| As (2.5) |
Ba (1) |
Cd (0.5) |
Cr (1) |
| Hg (0.05) |
Pb (0.5) |
Sb (0.5) |
Se (0.5) |
| Figures in brackets denote limits of quantification in mg/kg. Minimum sample amount: 100 mg. Method: ICP-QMS.

Sample preparation: Comminute the sample so that no surface dimension exceeds 6 mm. Place sample in a volume of tempered (37°C) solution of hydrochloric acid (0.07 mol/L) equivalent to 50 times the sample weight; agitate for one hour, leave for one additional hour and filter or centrifuge before analysis.

| Other elements can be determined. Please discuss your needs with the laboratory. |
