A microwave system is used for dissolution of e.g. biological samples, leaching of sludge and sediment, and for digestion of water samples. The samples are processed in sealed teflon containers in a specially modified microwave oven. This enables far more rapid dissolution compared to the traditional technique (i.e. using open vessels on a hotplate). It also prevents the loss of volatile elements and avoids contamination from the environment.
